duke alexander tiernay Duke was born to parents he never even met and aside from the name they gave him, he had no connection to them outside of the fact that they were biologically his parents. When he was about six months old he was given up for adoption to a couple who lived in Dallas, Texas. While originally he had been named Josh, his parents renamed him to Duke Alexander and he was given their last name of Tiernay. He was a normal baby, no major issues or anything, healthy, developed normally and outside of the glasses he had to get when he was a baby, there were no problems.
When he was four years old his parents were finally able to produce their first biological child, a little girl they named Queenie. They doted on her and while they still cared for Duke he was pushed to the side slightly in favour of their 'real' child. He didn't mind at first, at the age where he was trying to break away from his parents to prove that he was very grown up and very correct in everything he did. He managed to an extent but he was only four so he wasn't able to do anything major.
This continued on, with him starting school and working hard to try and get the best marks he could and they were overshadowed by his parents wanting him to proud of Queenie for taking her first steps when he shows them his first all A report card. He continued to force himself to be the best he could be, because it meant that they noticed him.
As a child he never quit got why his parents liked Queenie more than they liked him but he just continued to work hard to prove than he was better than her while trying at the same time to see what was so great about her. Queenie on her part doted on her older brother and it made it hard for him to dislike her, and so he ended up just being constantly annoyed by her rather than outright hate. An annoyance which after the first couple of times of getting in trouble he learned to hide.
Middle school was spent working for his grades, making sure he was the top of his class which he managed with the 4.0 and perfect attendance he had. Joining a sport when he went into his freshman year of high school was another way for him to try and garner his parents attention but by that time Queenie had begun Middle School and so everything was focused on her.
He sort of gave up after he shot the winning goal in soccer and all he got was a pat on the back from his parents, quitting the school sports team and letting his grades slip down to just average, not really caring enough anymore. While he managed to stay out of the wrong crowd his life became directionless, even more so as his parents were forcing Queenie to go with him everywhere.
It was near the end high school that he just quit everything. He turned at the end of his junior year, got his GED, packed everything up and against the yelling of his parents left the house with the words 'and never come back' ringing behind him. And he worked to make sure that that would stay correct.
He wandered from town to town for a bit until he settled in parks, getting a job at one of the restaurants
